You need 'use client' when:

  • You use hooks like useState or useEffect.

5. My Opinionated Best Practices

If you want your app to feel snappy and your code to stay maintainable, follow these:

  • Don't put 'use client' at the page level. It defeats the whole purpose of Next.js 14. Move it down to the smallest possible component.
  • Fetch data in Server Components. It’s just easier. No more loading states in useEffect or messy fetch calls in the browser.
  • Pass "Server" to "Client" via Props. You can fetch data on the server and pass it down as props to a client component. Just make sure the data is "serializable" (no functions or complex classes).
  • Use Suspense for UI. Instead of managing if (loading) in the client, use Next.js loading files or Suspense boundaries. It looks way more professional.

Conclusion: What I’ve Learned

The biggest takeaway from my last three months of development is that Server Components are for performance, and Client Components are for experience.

When I stopped fighting the architecture and started embracing the "Server-first" mentality, my apps got faster and my bundle sizes dropped by nearly 40%. It’s not about following the rules—it’s about making the app feel instant for the user.
