Hey everyone, I’m Prashuk. If you’ve been building React apps for a while, you know the drill. You start with a small src/components folder, everything feels clean, and you’re moving fast.
But then, the project grows. You add an admin dashboard, a landing page, maybe a mobile-specific web view. Suddenly, that "clean" folder structure looks like a junk drawer. I’ve spent way too much time hunting for a single Button.tsx file buried under layers of poorly named folders.
In one of my recent projects—a large-scale SaaS platform—we hit a wall with a standard monolith structure. The build times were lagging, and developers were constantly stepping on each other's toes. That’s when we shifted to a Monorepo using Turborepo, and honestly, it changed the game for us.
Here is how I approach architecting React apps that don’t fall apart when you add the 100th feature.
1. Stop Organizing by File Type
When I first started, I used to group things by components, hooks, and services. It sounds logical, right? But it’s actually a nightmare to maintain.
What worked for me was switching to a Feature-Based Structure. Instead of looking for a hook in a giant hooks folder, I look for it inside the features/auth or features/billing folder.
The logic is simple: If you delete a feature, you should be able to delete one folder and have 90% of the related code gone without breaking the rest of the app.
2. The Monorepo Strategy (Shared Packages)
I ran into this issue when we had to build an internal admin tool alongside our main customer app. We needed the same branding, the same API wrappers, and the same Zod schemas.
Instead of copy-pasting code (which is a recipe for disaster), we used a Monorepo. We split the code into:
- Apps:
web,admin,docs - Packages:
ui(our design system),utils(helpers),config(ESLint/Tailwind settings)
This way, if I update the primary brand color in @my-app/ui, it reflects across both the main site and the admin panel instantly.
3. Folder Structure that Actually Scales
Here’s a snapshot of what my packages/ui or apps/web/src usually looks like. I like to keep it flat and readable.

4. Handling Global State Without the Bloat
I’m a big fan of keeping state as local as possible. In my experience, people reach for Redux or Zustand far too early.
In one project, we had a massive global store for everything—even form inputs. It made the UI feel sluggish. I moved the server state to TanStack Query (React Query) and kept only the truly global stuff (like user auth or theme) in Zustand.
The performance boost was massive because we stopped re-rendering the entire app every time a user typed in a text field.
5. Performance and Clean Code
I care a lot about UI smoothness. If the app feels "heavy," the user will leave.
- Lazy Loading: I use
React.lazyfor every major route. There’s no reason a user on the Login page should be downloading the "Settings" page code. - Barrel Files: Use
index.tsfiles to export things from folders. It makes imports look much cleaner:import { Button, Card } from '@/components';instead of 5 different lines.
Best Practices for the Long Run
- Keep Components Small: If a file is over 200 lines, it’s probably doing too much. Break it down.
- Strict Props: Use TypeScript interfaces for everything. I ran into so many bugs in my early days because I was lazy with
any. Never again. - Standardized Naming: I prefer PascalCase for components (
PrimaryButton.tsx) and camelCase for everything else. Consistency beats "clever" naming every time.
Final Thoughts
Architecture isn't about being perfect from day one; it’s about making it easy to change things later. Whether you’re using Turborepo or just a simple Next.js setup, the goal is the same: Separation of concerns.
