Hey everyone, I’m Prashuk. If you’ve been following my work, you know I’m obsessed with building things that actually work in production without making me want to pull my hair out six months later.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the MERN stack trenches, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that Tailwind CSS is a double-edged sword. It’s incredibly fast to write, but if you don’t have a strategy for your design system, your codebase quickly turns into a "div-soup" of utility classes that no one—including you—understands.
Here is how I approach building maintainable design systems with Tailwind, based on what’s actually worked in my projects.
1. The "Hardcoded" Trap
In one of my earlier projects, I made the mistake of using raw Tailwind classes like bg-blue-500 or text-slate-900 directly inside my components. It worked fine until the client decided "blue" wasn't "on-brand" anymore and wanted a specific shade of indigo.
I had to search and replace colors across fifty files. It was a nightmare.
What worked for me was abstracting the theme into CSS variables. Instead of hardcoding colors in the tailwind.config.js, I map them to variables.

Now, if the brand changes, I update one CSS file. Plus, this makes dark mode implementation ten times easier because you’re just swapping variable values, not class names.
2. Managing Component Variants (Stop using if/else)
I ran into this issue when building a complex dashboard. I had a Button component that needed to be primary, secondary, outline, small, large, and loading. My component logic was becoming a mess of template literals and ternary operators.
I’ve found that using a library like class-variance-authority (CVA) is the cleanest way to handle this. It lets you define your UI states in a structured object rather than messy strings.
Here’s a quick look at how I structure a Button now:

This keeps the UI logic separate from the functional logic. Clean code, happy developer.
3. The "Atomic" Approach to Layout
One thing I see a lot of devs do is put margin and padding on the component itself (e.g., a Card component having m-4). I strongly believe components should be "space-neutral."
In my experience, as soon as you give a component a margin, you’ll need to use it somewhere else where that margin breaks the layout. I prefer to let the parent decide the spacing using flex, grid, or gap. It makes your components way more reusable across different screens.
4. Performance & The "Purge" Mindset
I care a lot about performance. Tailwind is great because it generates a small CSS bundle, but if you start dynamically constructing class names like text-${color}-500, Tailwind’s scanner won't find them, and they won't be included in your production build.
I’ve seen junior devs struggle with "missing styles" in production for this exact reason. Always use full class names or lookup objects. Don't try to be clever with string interpolation for classes.
5. My Best Practices (The "Prashuk Checklist")
- Use
tailwind-merge: It’s a lifesaver for avoiding class conflicts when you're passingclassNameas a prop. - Semantic Naming: Name your colors based on their function (
action-primary) rather than their appearance (bright-blue). - Limit your Config: Don't add every possible spacing and color value. A design system is about constraints. If you have 50 shades of grey, you don't have a design system; you have a mess.
- Component Folders: I usually keep a
components/uifolder for these atomic pieces (buttons, inputs, cards) and keep them separate from "feature" components.
Conclusion
Building a design system isn't about making things look pretty—it's about making things predictable. When I look at a piece of code I wrote three months ago, I want to understand exactly why a component looks the way it does.
By using CSS variables for themeability and CVA for variants, you create a system that grows with your project instead of becoming a technical debt anchor.
