When I first started, I used to think "scalable" meant using every complex library under the sun. I was wrong. Scalability is actually about how easily you can add a new feature six months later without breaking ten other things.
Here’s how I actually build React apps these days using Tailwind and Redux.
1. The "Feature-First" Folder Structure
In one of my projects—a large e-commerce dashboard—I made the mistake of putting all my components in one folder. Within a month, I had 150 files in there. It was a mess.
What worked for me was switching to a feature-based structure. Instead of folders like components, hooks, and slices, I group things by what they do. If I’m building a "Cart" feature, everything related to the cart—the UI, the Redux logic, the specific hooks—stays in a features/cart folder.
It makes finding things so much faster. If the cart breaks, I know exactly which folder to look in.
2. Utility-First UI (Tailwind is a cheat code)
I’m big on UI, but I hate jumping between a .jsx file and a .css file every five seconds. I ran into this issue when I was trying to implement a dark mode toggle on a tight deadline. Writing custom CSS for every state was slowing me down.
With Tailwind, the speed is just different. But to keep it "clean," I avoid long strings of classes in my main logic. I use the clsx or tailwind-merge libraries to handle conditional classes.
My rule of thumb: If a button has 20 Tailwind classes, I move it into its own small reusable component. Don't let your HTML get ugly just because you're using utility classes.
3. State Management without the Headache
A lot of people say Redux is "boilerplate heavy." Honestly, if you’re still using old-school Redux with switch statements, I agree. But Redux Toolkit (RTK) changed the game for me.
I use createSlice for everything. What I love about RTK is createAsyncThunk for API calls. I used to manage "loading," "error," and "data" states manually for every single fetch request. It was exhausting. Now, I let RTK handle the lifecycle of the request.

4. Performance: Stop over-rendering
Performance isn't just a buzzword; it’s about user experience. I ran into this issue when a list of 500 items was making the whole app lag every time a user typed in a search bar.
I started using useMemo and useCallback, but sparingly. Don't wrap everything in them—that actually hurts performance. I also rely heavily on Lazy Loading. If a user is on the login page, they don't need to download the code for the "Settings" or "Admin" panel. Using React.lazy() and Suspense cut my initial bundle size by nearly 40% in my last project.
Best Practices I Live By:
- Keep components small: If a file is over 150 lines, it's probably doing too much. Split it.
- Zustand for small stuff: If a project doesn't need a massive global state, I’ll swap Redux for Zustand. It’s lighter.
- Custom Hooks for Logic: Keep your UI components focused on the UI. Move the API logic or calculations into a custom
useSomething()hook. - Consistency over perfection: Pick a naming convention and stick to it. It matters more than you think.
Final Thoughts
Building a scalable app isn't about using the "best" tools—it's about using them in a way that doesn't make you want to quit your job in three months. Tailwind keeps my UI fast, Redux Toolkit keeps my data organized, and a feature-based structure keeps my sanity intact.
