If you’ve been following the React ecosystem lately, you know that React Server Components (RSCs) are the "big thing." But honestly, when I first started moving my projects over to the Next.js App Router, I was pretty frustrated. I kept hitting "Event handlers cannot be passed to Client Component props" errors and felt like I was fighting the framework rather than building features.

After a few late nights and a couple of production deployments, I’ve realized that RSCs aren't just a "new way to fetch data"—they are a complete shift in how we architect UI.

Here is how I actually handle RSCs in my projects to keep things fast and the code clean.

1. The "Server by Default" Mindset

In one of my recent projects—a project management dashboard—my first instinct was to just put 'use client' at the top of every file because I needed useState for a couple of search inputs.

That was a mistake.

What worked for me was forcing myself to keep the parent layouts and page files as Server Components. This keeps the heavy logic and data fetching on the server. I only "sprinkle" interactivity where it’s actually needed.

Think of your page like a tree: The trunk and big branches should be Server Components. Only the leaves (the buttons, inputs, and charts) should be Client Components.

2. Composition is your Best Friend

I ran into this issue when I had a heavy Sidebar (server-side) and a Search Bar (client-side) that needed to live inside a Layout. If I made the Layout a Client Component, the whole page became client-side. Not great for performance.

The trick is using the children prop. You can pass a Server Component as a child to a Client Component.

By doing this, React is smart enough to render the Server Component on the server and just "plug it in" to the Client Component. This keeps your JS bundle tiny.

3. Data Fetching without the "Loading Spinner Hell"

Before RSCs, I used a lot of useEffect hooks for data fetching. It always led to those annoying layout shifts where the page jumps around while loading.

Now, I fetch data directly in the component using async/await. In a recent e-commerce project, I used this pattern for the product grid:

The best part? No Loading... state logic cluttering the component. I just wrap the component in a Suspense boundary in the parent, and Next.js handles the rest. It feels way more like "standard" programming and less like "state management gymnastics."

4. Handling Shared State (The "No-Context" Rule)

This is where I see most people trip up. We are so used to wrapping everything in a Provider (like Redux or Context API). But if you put a Provider at the root of an RSC app, you’ve essentially turned your entire app into a Client Component.

In my experience, you usually don't need global state as much as you think.

  • Need to filter a list? Use URL Search Params.
  • Need user data? Fetch it in the layout on the server.
  • Only use Context for small, localized "islands" of interactivity, like a complex form or a dark-mode toggle.

Best Practices I Live By:

  • Keep the "Data Heavy" stuff on the Server: If it touches a database or an API key, it stays in an RSC.
  • Client Components for UI Logic only: Things like onClick, window.addEventListener, or framer-motion animations.
  • Pre-fetch aggressively: Use the Link component from Next.js; it automatically pre-fetches the server components for the next page.
  • The "Data Sink" Pattern: Pass data down from Server to Client as props, but never the other way around.

My Takeaway

RSCs definitely have a learning curve, and the "boundaries" between server and client can feel blurry at first. But once you stop trying to make everything a "Client Component," you'll notice your apps feel much snappier.

In my last build, I managed to cut the shipping Javascript by about 40% just by moving my heavy data-parsing logic into Server Components. That’s a huge win for mobile users and SEO.

Don't overcomplicate it. Start with Server Components and only add 'use client' when React screams at you.
