Lately, I’ve been diving deep into performance optimization. If you’ve worked with Next.js or any SSR framework, you’ve probably seen that dreaded red error in your console: "Text content did not match. Server: X, Client: Y."
It's annoying, it breaks your UI, and if you don't fix it, your First Input Delay (FID) goes through the roof. Here is how I’ve been handling hydration issues in my recent projects.
The "Oh No" Moment with Dynamic Content
I ran into this issue when I was building a personalized dashboard for a client. I wanted to show the current time and some data from localStorage right on the initial render.
On my local machine, it looked fine. But the second I pushed it to production, the layout shifted like crazy, and the console was screaming at me. The server was rendering one thing (the default state), and the browser was trying to render another (the actual user data).
This mismatch forces React to ditch the pre-rendered HTML and rebuild the whole thing on the client side. Not only does this look glitchy, but it also kills your performance.
What Worked for Me: The "Mounted" Hook
In one of my projects, I realized the simplest way to handle this isn't to fight the server, but to wait for the client.
If you have a component that relies on window, localStorage, or even just a random number, you shouldn't let the server try to guess what that value is. What worked for me was creating a simple hasMounted state.

This keeps the server-side HTML stable and tells React: "Hey, wait until you're actually in the browser before you try to render this dynamic bit."
Improving FID: Stop Locking the Main Thread
Hydration doesn't just cause UI flickers; it locks up the main thread. If you have a massive page with tons of interactive components, the browser is busy "hydrating" (attaching event listeners) while the user is trying to click a button. That’s how you get a bad First Input Delay score.
I’ve started using next/dynamic heavily. Honestly, why load a heavy "Settings Modal" component on the initial page load if the user might never click it?
By lazy-loading components that aren't visible immediately, you're giving the browser a break. It hydrates the core UI first, gets the page interactive, and loads the rest later.
Dealing with Dates (The Silent Killer)
Dates are the absolute worst for hydration. If your server is in UTC and your user is in New York, your Intl.DateTimeFormat will output different strings.
I learned this the hard way when a "Post Created At" label kept jumping around. My opinion? Never render raw date strings on the server if they depend on the user's local timezone. Either stick to a generic format on the server and update it on the client, or use the suppressHydrationWarning attribute if the difference is tiny and non-breaking. But use that one sparingly—it’s a bit of a "code smell" if overused.
My Best Practices for Clean Hydration
- Keep the initial HTML light: The less React has to hydrate, the faster the "Time to Interactive" will be.
- Lazy load below-the-fold content: Use
dynamicimports for things like charts, maps, or complex forms. - Use Skeletons: Instead of showing "wrong" data that changes a split-second later, show a nice skeleton. It feels faster to the user anyway.
- Check your console often: Don't ignore those hydration warnings. They are usually a sign that your SEO is suffering because the crawler is seeing something different than your users.
Learning Lessons
At the end of the day, hydration is just a handshake between the server and the browser. If they don't agree on what the page looks like, the user pays the price in lag.
Focusing on these small implementation details—like the hasMounted pattern and smart component splitting—has made my apps feel way more "native" and snappy.
