If you’ve been following the React ecosystem lately, you know that React Server Components (RSC) changed the game. But let’s be real—when the App Router first dropped, most of us (myself included) just treated it like the old Pages router but with a different folder structure.
I learned the hard way that if you don't handle data fetching and hydration properly, your "modern" app will actually feel slower than a basic React SPA. I've spent a lot of time lately refactoring my own projects to get that "instant" feel.
Here is what I’ve learned about making RSC actually performant.
1. Stop the "Waterfall" Fetching
In one of my recent projects—a project management dashboard—I noticed the page took nearly 3 seconds to show anything. I realized I was doing this:

This is a classic "waterfall." Each request waits for the previous one. Even though it's on the server, the user is just staring at a loading spinner (or worse, a blank screen).
What worked for me was using Promise.all for independent requests. If the data doesn’t depend on the previous result, fire them off at the same time. It cut my load time in half.
2. Move the "Client Boundary" Down
I used to make the mistake of putting 'use client' at the very top of a page because I needed one little useState for a toggle.
The problem? Once you mark a component as a Client Component, everything imported into it becomes part of the client-side JavaScript bundle.
Now, I try to keep the "heavy lifting" (data fetching) in the Server Component and only move the interactive parts—like a search bar or a "Like" button—into tiny, isolated Client Components. This keeps the JS bundle small and the UI snappy.
3. Streaming is Your Best Friend
I'm big on UI/UX, and there's nothing worse than a page that waits for a slow API call before rendering anything.
Instead of making the user wait for the whole page, I use Suspense. In a recent e-commerce side project, the product details were fast, but the "Related Products" API was slow. I wrapped the related products section in a <Suspense> with a nice skeleton loader.
The user sees the main content instantly, and the slow parts "stream" in whenever they're ready. It makes the app feel way faster than it actually is.
4. Selective Hydration and Clean Code
When you pass data from a Server Component to a Client Component, that data gets serialized. I ran into this issue when I was passing a massive JSON object (like 500kb) as a prop to a client-side chart.
The hydration took forever because the browser had to process all that JSON twice.
My rule of thumb now: Only pass the exact fields the client component needs. If the chart only needs date and value, don't pass the whole user and metadata object. It keeps the HTML lean and the hydration quick.

Best Practices I Live By
- Fetch where you use it: Don't prop-drill data. If three components need the same user data, fetch it in all three. Next.js automatically memoizes (caches) these fetches, so it only hits the DB/API once.
- Keep 'use client' at the leaves: Think of your component tree like a tree—keep the interactivity at the very ends of the branches.
- Use SEO to your advantage: Since RSCs render on the server, your SEO is baked in. Don't ruin it by moving your main text content into client components.
- Pre-load data: Use
link rel="preload"or Next.jsprefetchfor routes you know the user will click.
Final Thoughts
Transitioning to Server Components isn't just about moving code to the server—it's about thinking differently about how data flows. My biggest takeaway from my last few builds is that UI should never be blocked by data.
Use parallel fetches, stream your slow UI, and keep your client components thin. Your users (and your Lighthouse score) will thank you.
