I spend most of my day building things with React and Next.js. If you're like me, you probably spent a lot of time making your UI look pixel-perfect, only to realize that when you actually deploy the site, the "feel" is off. The hero image takes an extra second to pop in, or there’s that weird flash of unstyled text (FOUT) that just kills the vibe.
Performance isn't just about a Lighthouse score. It’s about how fast the app feels to a real person. Today, I want to talk about how I handle the Critical Rendering Path using Preloading, Prefetching, and Priority Hints.
1. The "Aha!" moment with Preloading
I ran into this issue when I was building a landing page for a client last year. We had this massive, high-quality hero image that was central to the brand. Even though the site was fast, the hero image was the last thing to load. It looked broken for a split second.
What worked for me was using rel="preload".
Basically, you’re telling the browser: "Hey, don't wait until you parse the CSS to find this image. Start downloading it NOW."
In React (especially Next.js), you don’t always have to do this manually with link tags, but knowing that priority on a Next.js Image component just maps to a preload hint is a game-changer. If it’s above the fold, preload it. Period.
2. Priority Hints: Telling the browser what actually matters
For a long time, we just let the browser guess what was important. But browsers aren't mind readers. They might think a small icon is as important as your main LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) element.
I started using the fetchpriority attribute recently, and honestly, it’s one of the simplest wins for clean code and better performance. In one of my projects—a heavy dashboard—I had a bunch of API calls firing at once. By setting fetchpriority="high" on the main data fetch and "low" on the analytics scripts, the UI became interactive much faster.
3. Prefetching: Predicting the future (without overdoing it)
Prefetching is a bit different. It’s for things the user might need next.
I’ve seen developers (and I’ve been guilty of this too) prefetch every single link on a page. Don’t do that. I learned the hard way that if you prefetch 20 different routes on a mobile connection, you’re just eating up the user's data and slowing down their current experience.
What I do now is use "Intent-based prefetching." If a user hovers over a menu item, that’s when I trigger the fetch. Next.js does a lot of this automatically with the Link component, but you can turn it off for certain links if you know they lead to heavy pages that aren't usually clicked.
4. Real-world Implementation
Here’s a quick look at how I’d structure a hero section in a React component to make sure the browser knows exactly what to do.

5. My Best Practices (The "Prashuk" Way)
Over the years, I’ve boiled my performance workflow down to a few rules:
- If it’s above the fold, it’s high priority. Don't lazy load your hero image. It sounds obvious, but I see it in code reviews all the time.
- Fonts are critical. Always preload your primary brand font. There is nothing worse than the text jumping from Times New Roman to a custom Sans-Serif after two seconds.
- Check the Network tab. Open Chrome DevTools, go to the Network tab, and look at the "Priority" column. If your tracking pixels are "High" and your main script is "Low," you've got work to do.
- Don't over-optimize. If your site loads in 1.2 seconds, spending three days trying to get it to 1.1 seconds usually isn't worth it. Focus on the features.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, optimizing the critical rendering path is just about being a good host. You want to give your guests (the users) exactly what they need, exactly when they need it, without overwhelming them with stuff they aren't going to look at yet.
Start small. Add fetchpriority to your hero image today and see what happens to your LCP score. You might be surprised how much a small change can do.
