Hey everyone, I’m Prashuk. If you’ve seen my work, you know I’m obsessed with the "feel" of an app. You can have the cleanest architecture in the world, but if the user clicks a button and stares at a loading spinner for two seconds, it feels like a failure to me.

Lately, I’ve been diving deep into how to make Next.js apps feel instant. Not just "fast," but like the page was already there waiting for you.

Here’s how I’ve been using Predictive Preloading to cheat the perception of time.

The Problem: When Default Prefetching Isn't Enough

Next.js is pretty smart out of the box. If you use the <Link> component, it prefetches the JSON for the next page when the link enters the viewport.

I ran into this issue when I was building a data-heavy SaaS dashboard last month. We had a sidebar with about 15 different links. Because they were all "in the viewport" on page load, Next.js tried to prefetch every single one of them immediately.

The result? The initial page load was actually slower because the browser was busy downloading code for pages the user hadn't even thought about clicking yet. It was a waste of bandwidth and made the UI feel sluggish.

Intent-Based Prefetching: The "Human" Way

What worked for me was moving away from "viewport prefetching" and toward "intent-based prefetching."

Instead of loading everything, we wait for a signal that the user is actually going to click. Usually, a human hovers over a link for about 100ms to 300ms before they actually press down. That’s a massive window of time we can use to start the fetch.

By the time their finger finishes the click, the data is already in the cache. To the user, it feels like the app is psychic.

How I Implemented It

In one of my recent projects, I created a custom SafeLink component. I turned off the default prefetching and handled it manually using the router.prefetch API on a mouse-over event.

Here’s a simplified version of what I used:

Why this works: It keeps the initial pipe clean. We aren't hammering the server for 20 pages at once. We only fetch when the user's mouse moves toward a specific destination.

UI and Performance Balance

I’m a big believer that performance is UI. If a transition is instant, you don’t even need a loading bar.

When I implemented this on the dashboard I mentioned earlier, our "Perceived Load Time" dropped significantly. Even though the actual server-side rendering time was the same, the user didn't see it because we started the work 200ms early.

One thing to watch out for: Don't do this on mobile. On mobile, there is no "hover." I usually stick to the standard viewport prefetching for touch devices or just trigger the fetch on onTouchStart.

Best Practices (From the Trenches)

After breaking a few things and fixing them, here are my rules for prefetching:

  • Don't Over-Prefetch: If your page has 50 links (like a footer), do not prefetch all of them. It kills the LCP (Largest Contentful Paint).
  • Watch the Data: If your users are on limited data plans, aggressive prefetching is a jerk move. I usually check the navigator.connection.saveData property before firing off prefetches.
  • Prioritize the "Next Step": In a checkout flow, I'll always prefetch the "Payment" page as soon as they start typing their address. That’s a high-intent action.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, users don't care about your Lighthouse score; they care about how the app feels under their thumb or mouse.

Predictive preloading is one of those "hidden" features that separates a "good" app from a "polished" one. It’s about being proactive instead of reactive.

Try swapping out your standard links for intent-based ones in your next big project. I bet you’ll notice the difference immediately.
