Hey, I’m Prashuk. I spend most of my day living in the MERN stack, mostly building things with Next.js and React. If you’re like me, you probably care more about how a feature actually feels in production than the academic theory behind it.

Lately, everyone’s talking about React Server Components (RSC). When I first saw the docs, I’ll be honest—I was skeptical. It felt like we were going back to the PHP days. But after implementing it in a few client projects, I realized it’s not about going backward; it's about finally decoupling our data from our interactivity.

Here is the mental model that helped it click for me.

1. The "useEffect" Trap

We’ve all been there. You create a component, add a useState for the data, a useState for the loading spinner, and a useEffect to trigger the fetch.

I ran into this issue when I was building a heavy analytics dashboard for a client last year. I had about six different widgets, each fetching its own data. The result? A "loading spinner hell." The UI was jumping around as each fetch finished at a different time, and the client-side bundle was massive because of all the parsing logic.

With RSC, the mindset shifts. You stop asking the browser to go fetch data. Instead, the server does the heavy lifting and just hands the component the finished data. It makes the code so much cleaner.

2. Decoupling Logic from the Client

The biggest "Aha!" moment for me was realizing that not everything needs to be interactive.

In my experience, about 70% of a typical landing page or blog doesn't actually do anything—it just displays data. Why should the user’s browser download the JavaScript to render a static footer or a text block?

What worked for me was drawing a physical line on my wireframes.

  • Is this just showing data? Server Component.
  • Does it have a click handler, a form, or a state? Client Component.

3. Fixing the Waterfall

One thing I love about this mental model is how it handles "prop drilling" and waterfalls. In the old way, if a parent component needed data, it fetched it, then passed it down. If the child also needed data, it waited for the parent to finish.

In one of my projects, an e-commerce site, the product description was waiting for the main product image to load before it even started fetching. It was slow and frustrating.

With Server Components, I can fetch data directly inside the component that needs it—even if it's nested—without worrying about the client bundle size. Since it's all happening on the server, those "waterfalls" are happening over a super-fast internal network, not the user's spotty 4G connection.

4. A Practical Example

Here’s a simplified version of how I structured a recent project. Instead of fetching in a useEffect, I just make the component async.

5. My Best Practices

After breaking a few apps and fixing them, here are my rules of thumb for keeping code clean:

  • Keep 'use client' at the leaves: Don't put 'use client' at the top of your layout. Move it as far down the component tree as possible (like just the button or the input field).
  • Default to Server: I start every component as a Server Component. I only switch to Client if I absolutely need useState or an onClick.
  • Keep secrets secret: Because RSCs stay on the server, you can use private API keys directly. It’s a huge win for security and performance.
  • UI over everything: Use Suspense boundaries around your server components. It lets you show a nice skeleton state while the data is being fetched, making the app feel way faster than it actually is.

Final Thoughts

Switching to the RSC mental model isn't just a syntax change; it’s a performance play. It forced me to be more intentional about what I’m sending to the user’s device.

The biggest learning for me? Stop treating the client like a database coordinator. Let the server handle the data, and let the client handle the feel. Your bundle size—and your users—will thank you.
