I’m a full-stack dev who spends way too much time obsessing over Lighthouse scores and bundle sizes. In my experience, you can have the cleanest UI in the world, but if your React app takes five seconds to become interactive because of a massive JavaScript bundle, your users are going to bounce.
I’m not a fan of deep dive theories that you never use. Instead, I want to talk about how I actually handle "Tree-Shaking" in my real-world projects to keep production builds lean.
1. The Reality Check: Visualizing the Mess
You can't fix what you can't see. Most devs just run npm run build and hope for the best. I used to do that too, until I realized my "simple" dashboard was pulling in 2MB of JS.
What worked for me was adding source-map-explorer or webpack-bundle-analyzer to my workflow. I ran into this issue specifically when a client complained about slow load times on mobile. When I finally visualized the bundle, I saw that lodash and moment.js were taking up almost 40% of the total size.
My Tip: Run this command once a week:
npx source-map-explorer 'build/static/js/*.js'
It gives you a literal map of what’s taking up space. It’s usually a wake-up call.
2. The "Barrel File" Trap
We all love clean imports. We create an index.ts file in a folder and export everything from there. It looks great, but it can absolutely kill tree-shaking if your bundler isn't configured perfectly.
In one of my projects, I had a components/index.ts file that exported 50 different components. Even if I only needed a simple Button on the login page, the bundler ended up pulling in the heavy DataGrid and Charts components because they were all tied together in that one barrel file.
If you notice your "small" pages are huge, try importing directly from the file path instead of the index.
3. Killing the Heavy Lifters (Lodash & Dates)
This is the low-hanging fruit. If you’re using lodash, stop doing import _ from 'lodash'. This pulls in the entire library.
I’ve moved away from these big utility libraries entirely in my recent MERN projects. Modern JavaScript (ES6+) does 90% of what Lodash used to do. If I really need a specific function, I just install that specific package (like lodash.debounce) or better yet, write a quick helper function.
Same goes for dates. I’ve officially banned moment.js from my projects. It’s a beast and it's not tree-shakeable. I switched to date-fns or just dayjs. Honestly, even native Intl.DateTimeFormat is enough for most UI tasks.
4. Practical Implementation: Named vs. Default
Tree-shaking relies on ES Modules (import/export). If you’re still using require (CommonJS), tree-shaking won't work.
Here’s a quick code example of how I refactored a project's utility imports to save about 80KB:

buildfolder, not yourdevenvironment. Dev builds are always bulky for debugging.

At the end of the day, tree-shaking isn't just a "cool dev trick." It’s about making sure the person using your app doesn't get frustrated.
What I’ve learned is that you don't need fancy tools—you just need to be intentional about what you npm install. Every package is a liability. If you can write 10 lines of code instead of importing a 50KB library, write the code. Your performance scores (and your users) will thank you.
