Hey, I’m Prashuk. If you’re like me, you probably spend more time building and breaking things than reading 50-page documentation manuals. I’m a full-stack dev who lives in the React/Next.js ecosystem, and honestly, I’m obsessed with keeping my code clean and my UIs snappy.

Today, let’s talk about state management. It’s one of those topics where everyone has a "correct" opinion, but in the real world, the "correct" choice is usually whatever doesn't make your app crawl to a halt when the requirements change.

The Context API honeymoon phase

We’ve all been there. You start a new project, you need to pass a user object or a theme through three layers of components, and you think, "I don't need Redux for this. I'll just throw it in a Context Provider."

It feels great at first. No extra libraries, clean code, and it’s built right into React.

But I ran into this issue when I was building a heavy-duty admin dashboard for a client last year. I thought I was being smart by putting all the "global" data—user settings, sidebar state, active filters, and live notifications—into one big AppContext.

Big mistake. Every time a single notification popped up in the corner, the entire sidebar, the data table, and even the charts re-rendered. The UI felt "heavy." It wasn't broken, but it didn't feel premium.

The "Tipping Point"

In my experience, Context API is perfect for things that don't change often. Think:

  • Auth status (logged in/out)
  • Preferred language (i18n)
  • Dark mode toggle

But when your state is "noisy"—meaning it updates frequently (like text inputs, mouse positions, or real-time websocket data)—Context is your worst enemy. Because whenever a Context value changes, every component consuming that context has to re-render. There’s no way around it without writing a ton of complex useMemo wrappers that just end up making your code look like a mess.

Moving to Atomic State (Jotai/Recoil)

When the dashboard I was working on started lagging, I switched to Atomic State (specifically Jotai).

The mental model here is so much simpler. Instead of one giant balloon (Context) that pops for everyone, you have tiny "atoms" of state. If Component A uses atomA, and atomB changes, Component A doesn't care. It stays still.

What worked for me was breaking down that massive AppContext into five or six small atoms. One for the sidebarOpen state, one for the filterQuery, etc.

Here’s a quick look at how clean it looks compared to the boilerplate-heavy alternatives:

Why I’m looking at Signals lately

If you’ve been following the industry, everyone is talking about Signals (Preact, Solid, and now even some React implementations).

Signals take the atomic concept and go one step further. They don't even trigger a "React" re-render in the traditional sense; they update the DOM node directly.

The thing is, I haven't fully moved my production React apps to Signals yet because I like the stability of the React ecosystem, but I’ve used them in a small SolidJS side project. If you are building something with high-frequency updates—like a real-time stock ticker or a collaborative drawing tool—Signals are a game changer. They make performance issues almost disappear by default.

My "Rule of Thumb" for your next project

I try to keep things simple. Over-engineering is just as bad as bad performance. Here’s how I decide now:

  1. Keep it Local: If the state is only used in one or two components, just use useState. Don't make it global just because it feels "organized."
  2. Context for Static Stuff: Use Context for your theme, your auth, and maybe your API configuration. Things that change once per session or never.
  3. Atomic (Jotai) for UI State: If you have a complex UI where different parts of the screen need to talk to each other (like a filter sidebar affecting a list), use atoms. It keeps your code clean and your performance high.
  4. External Stores (Zustand) for Logic: If you have a lot of business logic (like a shopping cart with calculations), I usually reach for Zustand. It’s outside the React lifecycle and very fast.

Wrapping up

The biggest lesson I’ve learned from my projects is: Don't fight the tool.

Context wasn't built to be a state management engine; it was built to avoid "prop drilling." When I tried to force it to handle a complex dashboard, I spent more time optimizing renders than building features. Moving to an atomic model felt like taking a weight off the app's shoulders.

Start simple. When you feel the UI start to "stutter" or you see too many unnecessary highlights in the React DevTools, that’s your signal to move.
